In 2003, Cathy Horyn replaced Amy Spindler to become the second fashion critic in New York Times history. Since then, the unapologetic Ms. Horyn has managed to shake things up quite a bit. Along with her print work, Ms. Horyn edits the controversial “On The Runway” blog for the Times, and she’s been banned from fashion shows by Carolina Herrera, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Helmut Lang, Nicole Miller and Oscar de la Renta for her unfiltered opinions and seemingly mean-spirited observations. Of course, we expect fights in the fashion world: feuds, betrayals, catty comments. But Ms. Horyn shows that a newspaper critic can hold her own in the fray. She has provoked Lady Gaga (who disparaged her in a rap song), Snooki fans and Yves Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane. In an era when online battles erupt on a daily basis and then fade quickly away, it’s refreshing to see Ms. Horyn legitimately pissing off so many people.
