From an early age, it was clear that Jason Wu was destined for fashion greatness. Before some kids even know how to dress themselves, Mr. Wu was designing and sewing clothing for dolls. By 16 he was designing doll clothing on a professional level for Integrity Toys, and by 17, the company had named him creative director.
Unsurprisingly, when Mr. Wu decided to take his talents to the world of human fashion, he hit the ground running. After studying at Parsons School of Design, Mr. Wu debuted his first line in 2006, eventually earning himself the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star award. Mr. Wu’s sensational debut was definitely a predictor of future success; today, his signature ruffled and feathered garments have clothed a spectrum of celebrities, from first lady Michelle Obama to the fabulous RuPaul.
A Taiwanese-Canadian now based in New York, Mr. Wu is providing some welcome diversity to New York’s fashion scene. The accomplished Mr. Wu is only 30—and with the number of awards and celebrity endorsements he already has under his belt (a stylish one at that), there’s no telling how high his star will soar.
