Prabal Gurung is taking the fashion world by storm (seriously—his show during February’s New York Fashion Week took place the morning after Nemo). Mr. Gurung was born in Singapore, grew up in Nepal, worked in India, and came to New York in 1999 to study at Parsons The New School for Design. From there he worked with New York designer Cynthia Rowley, and then as design director for the Bill Blass brand. He launched his own eponymous line in 2009, and his clothes have since been sported by the likes of Michelle Obama, Oprah and Kate Middleton. No big deal. But Mr. Gurung hasn’t just achieved personal success. Like his contemporaries Jason Wu and Phillip Lim, he has helped open up the world of fashion to young, up-and-coming Asian designers. Having come this far since launching his first collection in February 2009, we’re certain that Mr. Gurung will play a major role in the fashion world for years to come.
