Calling All Mouseburgers: Cat Marnell, Edith Zimmerman, and Moe Tkacik on Helen Gurley Brown

At last night’s Housing Works panel on the legacy of the late Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown, Vice columnist Cat Marnell stood out. Wearing a tight, translucent white dress and leather jacket, she snapped her gum, played with her hair and  alternately stared wide-eyed at the audience or down at her phone.

Sasha Grey Sells Debut Novel

Sasha Grey has sold her debut work of fiction, The Juliette Society, it was announced Friday on Publisher’s Marketplace. We last saw Ms. Grey at Gagosian Gallery on Sept. 11 for the opening of an exhibition by Richard Phillips, which included a short film in which she serves as star and muse to the artist. For a while now Ms. Grey has been busy carving out a career for herself in music and film, and in March 2011, just before officially announcing her retirement from the adult film industry, she released her first book, a photo compendium called Neü Sex. Rona Jaffe Foundation Celebrates 2012 Writers’ Awards Winners

On Thursday night, the Rona Jaffe Foundation celebrated the 18th annual Writers’ Awards at which six emergent women writers of poetry, fiction and nonfiction possessing “exceptional talent,” were recognized and granted $30,000 each. This year’s lucky winners are Julia Elliott, Christina Nichol, Lauren Goodwin Slaughter, Rachel Swearingen, Kim Tingley and Inara Verzemnieks. Read More

Disparity in Salaries of Opera Bigwigs Is Not Unusual

James Levine, the Metropolitan Opera’s music director reportedly earned $2.1 million in 2010, which is more than Peter Gelb, the general manager of the opera house, who only made $1.4 million, the Huffington Post reports. While the news might surprise some, even in light of all the controversy that has arisen over Mr. Gelb’s management philosophy, the Met says you can’t compare Mr. Levine’s apples to Mr. Gelb’s oranges.
