ASME Nominations Are Here!

The American Society of Magazine Editors’ finalists for the National Magazine Awards just popped up in our inbox. No surprises here: New York and The New Yorker lead the pack with six nominations apiece, GQ trailed with five and Wired with four. It may excite you that the establishment finally recognized first time nominees The Fader and Vice. (Alternately, you may be furious those glorified marketing companies infiltrated it.) John Jeremiah Sullivan earned nominations for GQ (his David Foster Wallace piece) and The New York Times magazine (his stoned-at-Disneyland piece). But no need to choose sides! Gossip columnist Liz Smith made her way through the dining room of the Monkey Bar on Monday afternoon, where Harvey Weinstein, Diane von Furstenberg and George Stevens, Jr. were hosting a promotional lunch on behalf of The Artist—the black-and-white silent movie that Mr. Weinstein is gently, persuasively shepherding toward an Academy Award for Best Picture—and surveyed the scene, perched side-saddle in a red leather booth. New York Architects Pat Selves on the Back, Hand Out Awards

Last week the American Institute of Architects New York chapter handed out their annual design awards. Thirty-eight projects—all with some New York connection—were selected as winners and given “honor” or “merit” stamps of approval based on their “design quality, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness and technique.”
