“Hello! I love your paper!” Michael Bastian’s warm greeting was more than we’d expect to hear from the fashion star at his own presentation for GANT by Michael Bastian. Though he was encircled by handlers and a pack of press wolves, the smiling, silver-haired designer projected the charm and ease of a dinner party host sending Read More

The flashbulbs were visible from three blocks away. We thanked our lucky stars our cab driver didn’t have epilepsy, as we approached Skylight Studios. Fortunately, we made it to the venue safe and sound, and found ourselves standing in a long line. The ominous heavens were looking fondly upon good old Ralph, Read More
The Douglas Hannant show this morning was a veritable who’s who of New York’s social registry. Upon entering the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln center, we immediately noticed Jamee Gregory, Jean Shafiroff, CeCe Cord and Hilary Geary Ross, chatting and air kissing one another.
The space had been transformed into an uptown autumnal Read More
Muted oranges, woodland greens, and deep blues filled Anna Sui’s Fall 2012 collection, shown last night in the Lincoln Center tents. But the main motif was communicated in the accessories—a collection of knit hats with ears and sparkly eyes that looked like owls perched on the model’s heads, looking down on the hoi polloi all judgey-like, as if to say: “Who?” Read More
Last night, we watched a group of young women get down to Missy Elliott’s music as they waited for a newer rap diva to appear. Nicki Minaj, fresh off a not-widely-appreciated exorcism/performance at the Grammys, and Ricky Martin, fresh off something, were to appear in order to promote MAC’s “Viva Glam” line of cosmetics, which Read More
Outside, we were in SoHo.
A throng of hoisted cameras rushed an unmarked elevator, but a frenzied, red-lipped woman with a high ponytail and a clipboard acted as gatekeeper, keeping the onslaught at bay. Somehow, The Observer found ourselves inside.
One of the cameramen broke through to the elevator’s threshold, which was ready to depart for the Levi’s Fall 2012 collection preview. “I need to get my spot,” he told the woman.
“Absolutely,” she said, nodding. But it wasn’t an invitation to ride.
“No absolutely,” he said flatly. “I am Women’s Wear Daily.” He stepped in, gained clearance from someone else with a clipboard, and we ascended.
Inside, we were in Brooklyn. Read More

“Who is that guy wearing the American flag as pants?” we asked our seatmate, a Wall Street Journal writer (and former Socialiterank.com founder) Valentine Uhovski. We were sitting in the middle of the room in Milk Studios, waiting for Jeremy Scott‘s legendary fashion show to begin, and we were straining to see the celebs being snapped. We kept getting distracted by this guy’s pants, though.
“That’s Cobrasnake,” Valentine replied. “He’s taking picture of Terry Richardson sitting next to Joe Jonas.” Read More
The last time we were in the Park Avenue Armory was for the Winter Antiques show, where every inch of the massive space was covered in paintings, curios, Edwardian furniture and antique lovers, most of whom were no longer sample sizes. Last night, however, the space was entirely empty, save for two giant screens, each fifty feet tall, and not a single guest exceeded a size six. Read More
