Overheard in the Front Row of Whitney Eve

It’s been several years since Whitney Port spun-off from MTV’s The Hills for her own show about living in New York and trying to make it as a fashion designer. Perhaps she sensed a sinking ship in Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, Ms. Port chose to attach herself instead first to Lauren Conrad and Teen Vogue, and then People’s Revolution and Kelly Cutrone and socialite-in-training Olivia Palermo.

It was the right call, as evidenced by the fact that The Speidi zeitgeist couldn’t get photographed even if they wanted to these days, while Ms. Port has actually succeeded in transforming herself from reality show star to an IRL designer. Read More

“Happy Valentines Day!” we said, approaching Jenna Lyons at the J.Crew presentation today. Arcade Fire was blaring in the background, and, standing amongst next season’s looks in the tents, we were feeling quite at home. “You’re the first person that’s said that, thank you,” the brand’s bespectacled creative director said, with a slight sniffle. You Can Fake Fashion: CFDA Spotlights Anti-Counterfeit Collaboration in Lincoln Center, But Misses the Point


Back in July, 50 big-name designers including Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Derek Lam, Alexander Wang, and Rebecca Minkoff teamed up with Ebay and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to create tote bags bearing the anti-counterfeit message “You can’t fake fashion.”

The campaign was an attempt to decrease the cases of fake bags being sold and bought on the online marketplace. Fine. People want to protect their intellectual property, which makes sense. (Unless we’re talking about the MPAA and SOPA.) But instead of keeping these designs as an online exclusive, the CFDA has turned their message into art: showcasing the bags in display boxes lining the walls of Lincoln Center during Fashion Week. Out of all the shows we’ve gone to during this longer-than-a-week Fashion extravaganza, Betsey Johnson‘s was by far the most fun. Does that come as a shocker to anyone? The 65-year-old knows how to give her legion of fans–who run the gauntlet from punk-rock 15-year-olds to Russell Simmons–what they want, and we’re not just talking about her infamous cartwheel/splits routine that she’s become infamous for.
