The New York Daily News Returns to New York

The New York Daily News is back on this side of the Hudson. The newspaper’s downtown office at 4 New York Plaza was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and has been uninhabitable ever since. The lobby was flooded with water, the offices lost power and the building sustained significant damage to its infrastructure.

Since Sandy, the paper had been operating out of a makeshift newsroom at the News’ commercial printing facility in Jersey City in less than luxurious conditions—editorial staffers were divided between windowless rooms and a cafeteria where they sat on metal folding chairs and used cafeteria tables in lieu of desks. Times Reporter Ravi Somaiya Returns

The New York Times is bringing reporter Ravi Somaiya back stateside after an extended stint in London. Mr. Somaiya covered some of the more exciting stories to come out of Great Britain of late–phone hacking, Julian Assange, British riots, the Olympics.

“Happy to announce that I’ll be heading to the New York to work in the NYT mothership as of December 10. Thanks for everything London!” Mr. Somaiya tweeted earlier today. Read More

Andrew Goldman Returns to The New York Times Magazine

Andrew Goldman made his triumphant return to the pages of The New York Times Magazine on Sunday. Mr. Goldman, you may recall, was suspended from the magazine after he got into a Twitter kerfuffle with novelist Jennifer Weiner over a Q&A in the magazine’s “Talk” column that raised Ms. Weiner’s ire—and provoked Mr. Goldman’s own sharp tongue. The suspension lasted a little more than a month.

For his first “Talk” column since returning, Mr. Goldman played it safe with Lemony Snicket creator Daniel Handler. But that wasn’t the only piece Mr. Goldman had in Sunday’s Magazine. He also wrote a six-page story about Oliver Stone, who is busy promoting Untold History, his new mini-series. In the piece, Mr. Goldman spends a lot of ink describing the director-cum-liberal historian’s propensity for putting his loafers in his mouth. Read More

Protesters Re-Occupy Zuccotti Park

Occupy Wall Street protesters have returned to Zuccotti Park–without their tents, sleeping bags or other personal belongings. Protesters were evicted from the park at about one this morning during a late night NYPD raid. A court denied the protesters’ bid to restore their full encampment shortly before 5 p.m. Read More
