Michael Wolff Takes His J-School Hate Campaign To Columbia J-School

Michael Wolff—the Vanity Fair columnist, entrepreneur, and curmudgeonly media provocateur—trekked uptown last night to explain to a crowd of Columbia Journalism School students why they were wasting their money.

In a recent column in USA Today, Mr. Wolff argued that Columbia’s J-School was a racket and Steve Coll, newly named dean of the school, was the wrong person to run it. Steve Coll Named New Dean of Columbia J-School

Steve Coll has been named the new dean Columbia’s Journalism School, University President Lee Bollinger announced today.

“Steve Coll is one of the most experienced and respected journalists of his generation,” Mr. Bollinger said. “Sweeping changes in digital technology and the global marketplace have created unprecedented challenges and opportunities for the news media that demand our constant reflection on the mission and substance of a modern journalism education. Our Journalism School is thriving today because of its innovative response to these developments, and Steve’s breadth of experience as a reporter, editor, author and executive make him ideally suited to lead the School in the years ahead.” Read More

Columbia J School Dean Nicholas Lemann to Step Down

Nicholas Lemann announced that he will step down after a decade as the dean of Columbia Journalism School at the end of the year. Mr. Lemann, who is also a staff writer at The New Yorker, will take a year’s sabbatical before returning to the J School in 2014 as a faculty member.

“It’s a good moment for a new dean, with a new set of ideas, to come in. I have had a wonderful time leading this institution, and it’s hard to express how grateful I am to the many people who have helped along the way,” Mr. Lemann wrote in an email to friends, colleagues and students.  Read More
