ST. PAULWith Hurricane Gustav slamming into the Gulf Coast today, the schedule here at the Republican National Convention has been upended today and official events have been canceled. But lobbying, even for the property insurance industry (which will surely be paying out a fair amount of claims in coming months), goes on.

We bumped into David Sampson, a former deputy Commerce secretary under George W. Bush and president of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, early this afternoon. He seemed very much on task and undistracted by Gustav.

Sammy Hagar Tries to Turn Convention Rock Show Into Gustav Fund-Raiser, Gets Few Takers

On Sunday night, as Hurricane Gustav bore down on New Orleans and Republican Party elders scrambled to muffle all sounds of revelry from the Twin Cities, Sammy Hagar, the former Van Halen frontman, stood before a microphone at the legendary Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue. He was wearing plaid board shorts, sunglasses, and a logo T-shirt from Cabo Wabo Cantina, a bar he owns in Mexico. Hagar, who had just ripped through a set of his old standards, including “I Can’t Drive 55,” told his audience—several hundred Republican notables—that his band had just come from a gig in Houston.

“The hurricane is going to hit down there and that’s a big shame and all,” Hagar said.  read more »

Fox News' Shepard Smith and Geraldo Rivera to New Orleans, Brit Hume to St. Paul

Tonight, Shepard Smith will be anchoring Fox News' coverage of Hurricane Gustav from New Orleans beginning at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Afterwards, Brit Hume will continue the hurricane coverage, anchoring from St. Paul. From 10 p.m. to midnight, Geraldo Rivera will anchor live from New Orleans. 

Fox News will continue its live hurricane coverage throughout the night until 5 a.m. with Gregg Jarrett, Julie Banderas, Todd Connor and Uma Pemmaraju anchoring the late night shift. Beginning at 5 a.m., Fox & Friends will take over the hurricane coverage live from the channel's makeshift St. Paul studio. 

Over at the Fox Business Network, Alexis Glick will be leading all day coverage of the hurricane from New Orleans.

Tonight, ABC News' Charlie Gibson will be anchoring World News from New Orleans.  George Stephanopoulos will head up the network's convention coverage from St. Paul.

Katie Couric will anchor the CBS Evening news from the Gulf coast on Monday night, CBS News announced today.

Tonight,  Brian Williams will interview John McCain from the Gulf coast in the pathway of Hurricane Gustav for Sunday's Nightly News. In the meantime, Tom Brokaw will be heading up the network's coverage of the RNC convention in St. Paul.

Over at MSNBC,  Dan Abrams will be anchoring the channel's primetime hurricane coverage on Sunday from a studio in New York. On Monday, Mr. Abrams will handoff to Keith Olbermann. Chris Matthews will be anchoring the convention coverage from St. Paul.
