In 2008, The New York Times magazine wrote a story called "Malwebolence: The World of Web Trolling." Lots of scary stories about 4-Chan and it's /b/ board, Anonymous, etc., etc.

For the main photo of the story, the story used a fresh-faced Mr. Aurenheimer, then 22. The piece made him out to be anarchist misanthrope: "I hack, I ruin, I make piles of money,” he boasted. “I make people afraid for their lives." He is/was not a fan of the Federal Reserve, and *sigh* the Jews.

Weev is also the one responsible for stealing the identity of the writer of The New York Times article, Matt Schwartz. (Note: Though he disagrees with this assessment in our comments.)
The fact that he was able to hack into AT&T's database and discover that the company was selling lists of its consumers to Apple Inc. turned him, in the eyes of the law, into a felon. Especially after Weev and his team of Goatse Security downloaded 114,000 of these personal emails and sent them to Gawker. Mr. Aurenheimer, living in Little Rock at the time, awoke one day to find to find his home raided by the FBI. They weren't mad about his web trolling, or identity-stealing. No, they were furious about his dissemination of AT&T's information. They booked Weev on drug charges, and he's remained incarcerated since 2011.

After being released last month in March, someone asked what the hacker-activist planned to do next, to Mr. Aurenheimer apparently answered, "Occupy Wall Street!"

Would Batman Protect the 99 %?

Batman versus Anonymous

It just keeps rolling in today: first MTV decided that when seven strangers get together and stop being polite and start being real, at least one of them should be protesting in Zuccotti Park. Now a tipster "involved in the production" of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises has leaked to The LA Times that Liberty Plaza would be a great backdrop in Gotham.

But are these the smelly hippies that are city deserves? Would the Batman tolerate the General Assembly? Let's discuss!

We do know that the latest Batman film will be shooting in New York, because we went to the auditions. But could a high-budget movie really use all those protesters in a scene without their consent? That's a boring hypothetical question! Here's a more interesting hypothetical: if transplanted in Gotham, would OWS immediately start picketing outside Bruce Wayne's mega-mansion, or wait a couple days? And as for the Dark Knight himself, what side of the picket line would the vigilante fall on?

In Batman Begins, we are introduced to the Wayne family by way of Bruce's father's contribution to the city... a buzzing transportation system. Never mind that the union of this train would probably be on strike with the Occupiers, since Batman himself destroyed it in his epic battle with Liam Neeson's Ra's Al Ghul at the end of the first film. So now a mother of three with two part-time jobs and no health insurance will have to walk to work instead of taking the Wayne Monorail (or whatever)? Thanks, Batman. Point: 1 %

On the other hand, Batman hates corporate greed, as evidenced by the fact that he fires Rutger Hauer as the head of Wayne Enterprises and replaces him with Morgan Freeman. Point: 99 %

Point: 99 %

But wait, doesn't he actually use most of Wayne Enterprises - most likely a publicly traded company - as cover to buy and expense all his "wonderful toys"? Point: 1%

Add to that his George Bush-era surveillance tendencies as well as a complete disregard for the laws that govern society, and you basically have a Tony Balogna-on-steroids situation. One thousand points: 1 %

Watch out, New York Stock Exchange! You are the next target of the hacker group Anonymous, according to a YouTube video that went up October 5th. That would be the day of Occupy Wall Street's Megamarch, though the latter group has tried to distance itself from the hacktivist community.

Oh wait: Scratch that. A video appeared this weekend, from the same YouTube account as the first message, claiming that the NYSE would not be getting hacked after all...or at least not on a holiday. But now there's an even newer video, claiming that some of Anonymous is going through with the NYSE attack. Huh?

As it turns out, different factions of Anonymous are having trouble getting together on this whole "take down the entire stock market" idea.

So is Anonymous breaking up?

This whole issue stems from one YouTube account, AnonMessage, that is apparently only owned by one individual. (It gets tricky to tell how many people are involved with Anonymous accounts, since all their messages come out in the same computerized voice.)

Nevertheless, an October 7th update apologized: they were "mistaken" to have posted the past two videos - "Operation Invade Wall Street: A Message to the Media" and "Operation Invade Wall Street: A Message to the People" - since the messages did not come from the "official" AnonOps headquarters.
Transcript:

Hello, citizens of the world. My name is TheAnonMessage. I speak on behalf of myself and the Anonymous collective. I would like to point out a few things regarding my channel, my mission, and the two notorious videos that were posted by me almost a week ago.

My mission is very simple: To bring viewers of YouTube easy access to documents made by fellow An ons from AnonOps in a creative yet simple form of video. I am a messenger of Anonymous just as it says in my name. I aknowledge that I am NOT the messenger of the ENTIRE collective, but I represent the majority. The documents I choose to make videos out of involve several announcements of operations, new factions, and general news and information on Anonymous. Apparently, this time, I have not been entirely successful in completing my mandate, which is to bring the people of the world general news and information on Anonymous.

The last two videos up loaded "Operation Invade Wall Street: A Message to the Media" and "Operation Invade Wall Street: A Message to the People" were part of an operation formed by a group of An ons in AnonOps which was officially called hashtag operation invade wall street.

I did not support that particular message. But as a messenger, I had to address it, thinking it was justified by AnonOps.

I was mistaken.

Therefore, I would like to state my sincere apologies to anyone who was misinformed or dismayed by any of the two videos. I am sorry if any of the two videos caused any shaken trust in either me, this channel, or the Anonymous collective. I should have known the following:

-Anonymous would never tell the people to use LOIC after it has created consequences during our attacks of Operation Payback.
-Anonymous would never issue an attack on N Y S E during a holiday, as it is completely irrelevant.
-Anonymous would find it completely unnecessary to use a Distributed Denial Of Service attack on N Y S E dot com as it does not control or contribute to any stock trade or exchange of bonds within the one percent.
-Anonymous would find it plainly stupid to announce the attack 10 days before the attack takes effect. We do usual attacks quickly and swiftly.

As of now, operation invade wall street has been terminated. Many people could still proceed with attacking N Y S E. They will do it at their own risk. I do not support this because it is dangerous and a call for massive arrests. If you wish to proceed, remember to take the necessary precautions to hide yourself. If you are not an experienced hacker, do not, and I mean this, do not get involved. You will be putting yourself into trouble. Be ware. I will keep the existing two videos as they contain annotated information that will spread throughout the embedded videos.

Then yesterday another video appeared, just to clarify that there are indeed different factions of Anonymous that might have separate goals:

Transcript:

There's been some con flict, as always. Many people refuse to accept that Operation Invade Wall Street is a reality. Some say it is a COINTELPRO agent tactic to set the map for a false flag operation.

I am here to say that I am the messenger. As the messenger, I cannot take sides. I am not supporting or opposing invade wall street, and it was wrong of me to say that the operation has been terminated.

I am here to state the message.

I am here to clarify that factions of Anonymous are going with the operation. Other factions are opposing it....

I immediately follow this information with an important message. Do not use this tool if you are easily traceable, such as when using a house router or any other personal form of internet connection.

Earlier today there was a short hack on N Y S E dot com. I am not authorized to reveal any other information other than that it was down for 30 minutes in a matter of seconds.

Those who are going to be part of the attack have a message to the N Y S E: We hack you because we don't like you.

We are all Anonymous.
We are all one Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
N Y S E, expect those of us who plan to destroy you.

So essentially the AnonMessage account has been dealing with faulty information. Or possibly real information that it does not agree with, and some other Anonymous members might not agree with.

And this is what it looks like when a decentralized collective of Internet hackers start having organizational issues. Anonymous doesn't really work as a faceless entity to be feared if its members start airing their group's problems with the world.

Though on the plus side, the NYSE seems to be doing fine right now. Thank God for Columbus Day.

Jesse LaGreca (Photo via the Daily Kos)

When Fox News turned their cameras on the 31-year-old Daily Kos writer Jesse LaGreca last Wednesday, they didn't know what they were in for. Not only did Fox producer Griff Jenkins get schooled all over the Internet -- forcing Greta Van Susteren to respond on why they didn't air the footage of Mr. LaGreca's statements -- but suddenly the somewhat haphazard movement was given a clear and distinct voice.

"Fox News wants to laugh at us," Mr. LaGreca told us in a phone interview Tuesday evening. "To say that we're unruly, that we're to be laughed at....because that fits into their narrative, which is that only free markets can save us. Only unregulated capitalism can save us. And anyone in opposition to that needs to be attacked and marginalized.'"

Mr. LaGreca certainly does not fit into the media's stereotype of the obtusely disenfranchised ne0-hippies that have been camping out at Zuccotti Park. He's been a freelance writer for the Daily Kos under the name MinistryOfTruth for the last three years and is one of their most frequent writers and commenters. He's a member of various subgroups on the site, including their Anonymous forum, Environmental Foodies, and the Progressive Policy Zone. Mr. LaGreca is no East Coast liberal either: though he currently resides in New York, it's only been for a month. His previous homes were in Colorado and Illinois. He does not (as far as we know) have health insurance. He is subsidized for his writing mostly by a Paypal link he set up on his articles. He is articulate, with framed arguments that have obviously been rehearsed in advanced. Not only is he the face of "The Budding Stars of Occupy Wall Street," according to the Atlantic Wire, but his presence is large enough to inspire its own legion of fans. (We noticed that he had a larger Twitter following than our personal account.) Basically: Mr. LaGreca is Fox News' worst nightmare.

"Their first question was whether we were inspired by Greece," said Mr. LaGreca, referencing the the way the network would lead protesters to inflammatory answers, "Which had a couple of incidents of student violence...It's a running meme in the right wing media: that if we don't do something about our economy we're going to end up like Greece. But the only thing we can do is what Fox News has been showing us since the day Obama was inaugurated."

Mr. LaGreca is not, like the media has portrayed some of the protesters, a brainwashed Obama-ite. His Daily Kos article from August is a scathing critique of Obama's nomination of Sen. Mike Lee's general counsel for U.S. Attorney of Utah.

When asked if he would be willing to go on Fox News and finally get to tell his side of the story, Mr. LaGreca surprisingly demurred. "I don't want to go on with anyone who has a history of misconstruing people's statements. There's certain networks that I have an obvious bias against. But there are people like Keith Olbermann, Dylan Ratigan...Jim Axelrod, who was a total gentleman. I'm willing to give anyone a fair shake. I'm willing to talk."

Despite being a very vocal member down at Zuccotti Park, Mr. LaGreca denies speaking for the Occupy Wall Street movement. "I'm not a spokesperson for anyone but myself," he tells us.

Okay, but does he have any advice for those watching the watchmen; i.e. protesters on the lookout for cherry-picking media reporters?

"One: be camera ready. Have your camera on you so if there is a media slant, you can capture it. Two: have a coherent message. Tell people exactly why you are here...not what other people are doing. The overarching theme here is that people are being screwed, but that can't be summed up in a soundbite-ready statement. However if you tell the media your personal story, it's the most touching, the most effective way to communicating to people why they should be here as well."

According to the notice on Publishers Marketplace, Anonymous: Tales From Inside The Accidental Cyberwar was "pitched as Barbarians at the Gate for the digital era" and tells "the story of the ordinary people who became hacker-activists and successfully brought down government agencies and multinational corporations around the world." After the NYPD officer pepper-sprayed several women during the Occupy Wall Street rally, the mayhem-causing hacker collective found out the personal information of the Deputy Investigator and posted it all over the web. Now they have given a "36 hour warning" to the police in a new YouTube video.
Still, Anonymous claims they aren't literally threatening to kill the police: "If you wish to have the NYPD force alive as a whole -- and this is metaphorically speaking -- then stay away from the protestors. Otherwise you will face the same fate as the police in Egypt."

Since the Syrian government claims Egyptian protestors have killed at least 700 police officers, we're not sure how that's exactly metaphorical.

Whether or not the pepper-spray was used "judiciously" as the NYPD claimed, or whether it was a show of excessive force by one officer is probably only known by those that were part of the confrontation.

But the video was pretty damming, and Anonymous, one of the groups associated with the protests, decided to do what they do best and take vigilante Internet justice into their own hands. By blowing up a photo of the officer's badge, someone was able to track down the name and personal information of the Deputy Inspector and document it to the website Pastebin.com. It already 7,000 views earlier today, and that was before Gawker made the document their front page story. The document contains the names and addresses of not only the officer in question, but his personal relatives as well.

Thankfully we live in the type of world where two wrongs make a right, and that the mistake of pepper-spraying a potentially innocent protestor could be taken out on someone's daughter.

The Observer arrived at Zuccotti Park, across from 1 Liberty Plaza--the site of the camps, kitchen and "media tent" holding up the backend of the "Occupy Wall Street" protest that has been going for six days--just after 3:30 p.m.

Today's march, which started on Wall St. and headed up to Washington Square Park and then to Union Square--was winding its way back, having lost a few dozen good men to police custody, a.k.a. an out-of-service MTA bus. A protester, Josh Lewis, is tweeting from zipties on the bus, which he reports made its way eventually to 1 Police Plaza.

"In handcuffs yet still tweeting with numb thumbs," he texted The Observer. "Can't believe the lack of justice, will call when I'm out (hopefully soon)." Then, he texted, "(torture conditions in multiple vans... 'rioting animals') 1 police plaza!!!"

There were reports of between 50 and 100 arrests. Protesters at Liberty Plaza were reporting the names of the arrested to members of the Legal Team--"Kat, with a K! Lou Richardson!" A man with a notepad raised an objection. "No, his name's Lou Richardson. Or Luke Richardson! Who the fuck knows! Lou slash Luke Richardson!"--who were typing them into a list. Donated pizzas, pasta and bean salad were being served off the park's marble benches. Liberato's Pizza on Cedar Street was donating 20 pizzas for every hour a protester was held, protesters told The Observer--we also heard Ben & Jerry's had sent ice cream.

Soon, NY1 arrived--cheers from about the crowd. "The media blackout is over!"

"It's difficult for the media to build a narrative because this is a leaderless protest," said Patrick Bruner, the bony 23-year-old, dressed in a black t-shirt and black pants, who was orchestrating the public relations effort. Mr. Bruner, a recent graduate with an English degree, lives in Bed-Stuy and has been looking for a job for months--he heard about the protest by word-of-mouth and headed downtown last week to volunteer. He shaved his punkish haircut this morning after reading a New York Times story that portrayed the protest as a motley crew of anarchists, hippies and delinquents.

Mr. Bruner's phone rang. "Hi this is Patrick Bruner, Occupy Wall Street," he said. "How can I help you?"

It was Nathan Schneider of wagingnonviolence.org, who had just left the scene at Union Square. "Want to talk to a reporter?" Mr. Bruner asked, handing the phone over.

"The police were trying to stop the march," Mr. Schneider reported. "The Livestream team has been arrested." That morning, he met a woman who said she was administering the stream--he had just seen her loaded onto the MTA bus which was surrounded by police. "The Democracy Now PR person got an interview with a woman who was pepper-sprayed!" he said, excited.

Among the protesters at the park were many students from Wesleyan and other schools in the tri-state area as well as visitors from other states. The Observer met a couple, he 26, she 21, who had taken a bus from Akron, Ohio, this morning. Members of Anonymous--or at least, people wearing Guy Fawkes masks, the trademark of that group--were seen arrested. The police were enforcing an 1845 law that prohibits two or three people wearing masks to stand together in public, said one protester who had been involved in the effort since it started with an AdBusters call to action in July. He heard about the effort on Tumblr, he said.

The Observer ducked into a coffee shop and found Mr. Bruner typing at his laptop with two large cups of water. "I need an assistant!" he said. He was sending emails, watching the live Twitter feed from the arrested protester, and fielding calls from members of the protest's various teams. "Hey, Google just shut me down," he said into his cell phone--just a cell phone, not a smartphone--as he shook one hand in the direction of the computer in frustration. "I can't send emails."

For sending too many emails? we asked.

"For spamming!" he said. "When I'm not!"

We asked about the support the movement had received from businesses and local franchises. "McDonalds has been very friendly," he said. "Burger King has been exactly the opposite. They actually banned us from purchasing."

After another phone call, Mr. Bruner glanced at his computer, then at his phone, then looked at The Observer."The police are amassing on Broadway," he said.

It was time to go.

As The Observer scurried behind the long-legged publicist, he wiped his brow. "I've never done anything like this in my life," he said. "I think I'm doing a pretty good job."

The sound of drums rang out on Lower Broadway on Wednesday afternoon. Only it wasn't the extraordinarily percussive and emphatic drum sound one associates with street musicians attacking big plastic five-gallon containers. No, this was different...more grating and disharmonic, more halfhearted and druggy.

This was a protest!

Another clue: the impressive police presence surrounding Zuccotti Park. It might even have been a phalanx. Their motorcycles—or maybe scooters?— weren't particularly threatening, but they were super-shiny.

Finally, the people were rising up. It's been a long time coming, we thought. The Tunisians beat us to it. Actually, the Iranians were first, right? And the Thais, with their color war that nobody seems to understand but everyone feels very, very strongly about (it's true; we've asked Thais about this). The French. And the Egyptians, of course. The Bahrainis. The Syrians. The British. The Greeks. The Israelis, for heaven's sake!

Watching all that unfold (on Twitter), one couldn't help but wonder...what about us? What are our young people so content about? What were they waiting for, so politely, with their big headphones? What's wrong with these kids?

Surely our society could use some reforming as well, no? Our political system is a nauseating farce. Economy is a mess. Two wars are still underway, and they're not going super-great.
The Observer was thrilled. It was really happening! We decided to report from the front lines. We walked up to a protester, a young woman in a plastic yellow rain poncho.

"What are you doing here?" we asked.

"Oh, we're just here, like, you know, protesting what's going on," she replied.

"Cool, what specifically?" we asked.

"Everything going on, I mean. Take your pick!"

Her name was Jenna. We secretly hoped she was from Portland. Turned out she was a New Yorker. She said she worked right down the street.

"So, what would you like to see happen?"

"I really want to send a message, basically."

Hmm. Okay. She gave us a big smile. We considered interviewing the two guys who were sitting down in the lotus position. Modified lotus. But no. They seemed busy.

We asked Jenna if there was someone—not a leader, per se, or an organizer (we sensed it was best to avoid any buzzwords)...maybe a person with a leaderlike demeanor? Someone she might have heard articulating some strongly held belief or viewpoint of some kind?

"You might talk to that topless girl," she suggested.

Of course! We headed down the steps into the plaza. It was drizzling. The topless girl was talking to another reporter.

It seemed awkward to just stand there. We approached a guy with his face painted like Heath Ledger as the Joker. He said his name was Esteban V., and he'd spent two nights in the plaza despite the fact that the cops were not allowing anyone to set up tents.

He was mostly protesting because of the mortgage crisis. "People getting kicked out of their homes is just fucked up," he said. "We don't even get paid enough to cover those bills, and they do it on purpose."

He said he was from New York. We asked what he did.

"What's...so...funny!": Protester Esteban Vasquez.

"Like, jobwise?"

"Yeah."

There was a pause. It turned out he played music in a band, Gates of Despair. "The initials spell out God," he pointed out. He was 19, and this was his first protest.

We goaded him into giving us his last name by saying, "Do you really think you're going to be able to change the world if you're afraid to stand up and give your name, when you're not even really advocating anything?"

Vasquez, he said after a minute. Progress! We liked this kid.

A toughie: "So what do you actually want to accomplish? What's an actual thing you'd like to change?"

"An actual thing...would be..." He hesitated like maybe this was a test. It was. "Common wealth for all levels of culture. You know what I mean? Like we're the ones working the hardest, benefiting them, but then they just got too obsessed with their level of stature. What's a big stack of money going to do for you when everyone dies around you? Is that going to give you pleasure?"

"So, Communism?"

He made a face. "Communism! No! No, man. There are different levels for what people do. Not that everybody should be the same, but it should be more balanced out."

That sounded good. We were going to say something about him not having a job, but thought better of it. Why bust on the kid? He promised he'd be out here all night, no matter what, even if he was the last one. That was pretty hardcore.

Meanwhile, we looked around for the topless girl, but it was starting to rain and there was always tomorrow.
