To Do Sunday: Hanks a Bunch

With no parties to attend on this crisp Sunday, we’re off to spend the day indoors catching up on culture. David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross is in previews at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Broadway, with Al Pacino in a whole new role—he made young dynamo Ricky Roma famous with his film performance, but now assays the role of crumbling old Jack Lemmon. Meanwhile, Tom Hanks returns on-camera after producing just about every HBO historical flick with Cloud Atlas, a film in which he plays, among other characters across time, space and good sense, an Asian gangster. That is, if the perplexing trailer is to be believed!

‘Cloud Atlas’ Trailer Features Tom Hanks, Halle Berry in Multiple Roles: Watch

Critically-beloved David Mitchell novel Cloud Atlas, with multiple storylines all set in different centuries and locations but retaining consistent characters and motifs, seemed unfilmable. And it may very well have been! We'll have to wait until October 26 to find out, when the film adaptation is released in the U.S.

The directors are the Wachowskis of The Matrix and Tom Tykwer of Run Lola Run and Perfume (another literary adaptation, this one of a novel proven to be unfilmable). The trailer features stars like Tom Hanks and Halle Berry playing multiple roles (making literal the connections-through-time notion of the novel) and poor Jim Broadbent getting a plunger shoved in his face in the Martin Amis-esque section of the narrative.
