Officers took his iPhone, laptop and old notebooks, he wrote, adding that, according to the warrant, he is being investigated for charges including grand larceny.

"They're pretty worked up over a clip of Romney talking about his horses," Mr. Muto wrote of the unaired Fox News video footage he published on Gawker. Nick Denton's news site thought the clip was worth $5,000, five times the threshold for grand larceny in New York.

"I should have done something more innocuous, like hacked a dead girl's phone and interfered with a police investigation," he added, referring to Fox News parent company News Corp.'s ongoing phone hacking and bribery scandal.

The scandal thrust chief Rupert Murdoch in the spotlight again today in another installment of the Leveson inquiry. Testifying before a judge, a rehearsed, confident Mr. Murdoch denied asking any favors of Prime Ministers and claimed Gordon Brown misled Parliament when he said Murdoch tabloids hacked his family's medical records.

In the inquiry, Mr. Murdoch slammed the once-rampant phone hacking practice as a "lazy way of reporters not doing their job," but maintained that the celebrities, politicians and public figures—including himself—should be subject to greater scrutiny.

"A lot of these people are very big in the lives of ordinary people, big television stars, film stars, and, of course, I must include politicians. If we are getting into the issue of privacy, people with public responsibilities—I would even include press proprietors in that—I don't think they are entitled to the same privacy as the ordinary man in the street. If we are going to have a transparent society let's have everything out there," he said.

Everything except any information about about News Corp. cash cow Fox News, that is.

It's not every day an email about the Girl Scouts arrives in our inbox. And, hey, it's still 67 days until cookie season, according to the up-to-the-second countdown on the company's website. Why, then, did we receive a Tagalong-flavored dispatch on this day? And why is Cy Vance quoted in it?

Turns out former director of finance Yaasmine Hooey stole $310,000 from the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York.

OK, that's a lot of hard-earned cookie-buyer cash, but our dear district attorney is still able to smile a little about it. Might as well, right? I mean, like, Samoas. You ever really thought about what's on those things? Hilarious! So funny looking!

“Nonprofits are not personal cookie jars,” said District Attorney Vance. “But that is how the defendant is charged with treating the accounts of the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York. The defendant’s charged crimes not only violated the trust of the Girl Scout organization, but the trust of the girls that the organization serves. The District Attorney’s Office will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute crimes against nonprofit organizations.”

Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar, Cy? Well, apparently it's Ms. Hooey, but there's no conviction yet, and it's your job to get one. And do it fast! That amount can buy more than 89,000 boxes of Thin Mints. Justice needs to be served.

While the NYPD continues to make promises of an investigation of Deputy Inspector Anthony "Tony Bologna" Bologna's use of pepper-spray on unarmed female protesters during Saturday's Occupy Wall Street protests, he has yet to be disciplined. Despite videos showing two separate incidents of what appears to be unwarranted and abusive use of the weapon, Inspector Bologna still remains in active service. While that may seem like a grave injustice to women like Chelsea Elliott who were harmed during the attacks, the public outcry has been strong enough for the offices of Manhattan D.A. Cyrus R. Vance Jr. to launch a separate investigation into the case.

A spokesperson from the D.A.'s office told The New York Times today:

“The district attorney’s office takes all allegations of police misconduct seriously...(the arrests are) being reviewed under the standard procedure.”

While that might not sound very reassuring and pretty damn vague -- there was absolutely no mention of a specific officer or incident -- a source that had been briefed on the situation told The New York Times that Inspector Bologna's "episode" with the protesters were being investigated specifically due to the large amount of complaints the city received after the videos went viral.

Fun fact: Anthony Bologna works in the NYPD's counterterrorism unit, and according to one (anonymous) officer on the scene, wasn't intending to spray the women, but was aiming for "some men who he believed were pushing up against officers and causing a confrontation that put officers at risk of injury." Let's watch that video again, shall we?

It's true that we only have one angle of the incident to go on, but unless Inspector Bologna was aiming for the back of the head of the single male individual in black who was in the same vicinity of the meshed-in ladies, it appears that the spray was either indiscriminate, or intended for the women he was aiming for. Unless of course, the NYPD is referring to this second video, in which it is unclear who Inspector Bologna was spraying at...but since the police department's official stance is that pepper-spray was only deployed once during the protests, they are in a tough position of having to refer to evidence they won't admit the existence of in order to make that case.

At the time of this writing, the NYPD still has not responded to our inquiries regarding the second video.

Cyrus Vance Jr., reportedly Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau's chosen successor, officially announced his candidacy for the office this morning on the steps of City Hall, paying homage to his former boss' decades of service and saying he would "build on that tradition."
"In the last 75 years there have only been three elected district attorneys," said Vance. "All three of them have been legends."
The challenge for Vance, who was surrounded by other former assistant district attorneys on the damp steps, is to project both a fresh voice while placing himself in the continuum of his popular (potential) predecessor, who he was most careful not to offend.
