JOBS THAT ARE HARDER THAN YOURS
You may know Reddit as that wonderful social media community that yields things like AMA, or “Ask Me Anything” threads, wherein people who have had life experiences (like surviving being shot in the head) or jobs (like being a celebrity, or an investment banker) get asked by the public what it’s really like out there. But today, a thread like this appeared not in the AMA section of Reddit, but in one of the New York City-specific threads, wherein a paramedic moving to the city was looking for information about jobs.
The help they got from Reddit was practical, sure. On the whole, though, for the general public, it’s fairly enlightening.
The New York Times is beefing up their social media S.W.A.T. team; one comes from inside the building, the other, ProPublica. A memo from inside the Times, in which we learn what the social media masters at the paper of record need: A great understanding of Reddit.
Hugo Lindgren, ethical feminist, entered Reddit’s Ask Me Anything forum an hour ago to appeal to Reddit readers who have been on the fence about subscribing to The New York Times Magazine.
Of course, the questions soon turn to the important topics of the day: What Girls character did Mr. Lindgren most identify with?
Celebrities on the Internet
Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible…come on, you really don’t know who Joss Whedon is?) took to Reddit’s IAmA forum this afternoon. He was promoting his two new films, The Cabin in the Woods (which he executive produced) and The Avengers (which he directed).
Just in time for Valentine’s Day! Neil Strauss, author of The Game (and a lot of other books/articles, but mostly The Game) went on Reddit’s AMA section with a post titled “IAM a seven-time New York Times bestselling author (Neil Strauss).”
One commenter wanted to know his thoughts on the fact that Hookup Artist community has apparently sold out and is now all about the dollahs. (Instead of being all about how to trick women into sleeping with you, we guess.) The only problem? Mr. Strauss himself charges $100,000 for courses on seduction.
Woody Harrelson should have warned him…Reddit commenters can be brutal if they smell hypocrisy.
After enormous pressure from competing sites as well as the media, Reddit has instituted what administrators of the 800-lb gorilla of link aggregation call “A necessary change in policy” regarding sexual images of children:
Woody Harrelson plays a corrupt cop in the new film Rampart, depicting the police-force meltdown in late-1990s Los Angeles. But the actor has nothing against the fuzz—even despite his history of arrests and liberal stance on marijuana. During his research for the role, Mr. Harrelson rode along with police officers, and “most of the ones Read More
Yesterday we suggested fun questions to ask Woody Harrelson during his AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on link aggregation juggernaut Reddit, but as it turned out, our suggestions were probably mooted by Mr. Harrelson, who clearly did not understand what he was getting into. Mr. Harrelson appeared to treat the question and answer session like any other sit-down interview focused on promoting his upcoming film, Rampart, and that was his first mistake. Reddit users (Redditors) flayed him for the strategy, and have continued gleefully roasting the actor as only Reddit could for the last 24 hours or so.
We’re sorry…we know this is super embarrassing, but someone on Reddit found the crazy letter from that investment banker you were dating. You know which one…the guy you met at the Philharmonic who started stalking you after Date One because you wouldn’t call him back, so he was forced to Google your name till he found your email? Remember?
The guy who essentially created a spreadsheet detailing how you led him on because you played with your hair during dinner and said “It was nice to meet you” after your first date?
Anyway, we hate to be the ones to tell you, but that letter is all over the Internet now, and we thought you would like to know since you two are keeping the engagement kind of a secret right now.
Looking forward to the wedding,
Update: By the way, you might want to go check on your ex. He’s not doing too well either.
Last night on Reddit (so take this with a grain of salt), a user posted an image of a document “snagged by an occupy protester.” It’s a piece of paper from the NYPD’s “Disorder Control Unit,” outlining the tactics and guidelines an officer is expected to follow during a “civil disorder incident.” What you find below might surprise you…
