You don’t have to be Jewish to celebrate Southern Shabbat at chef Sarah Simmons’s delightful culinary salon City Grit, which features multiple meals each month with varying themes. Make new foodie friends in the cozy Soho space that hosts these communal dinners. About eight times per year, Simmons, named one of America’s greatest new cooks by Food & Wine, puts on this special mix blending her Southern roots with the traditional celebratory feast. “The Shabbat dinners are really special to me. I was raised Presbyterian, but I’ve been going to friends’ houses for Shabbat for years, and I have a not-so-secret wish to become at the very least an honorary Jew. So hosting Shabbat dinners are a way for me to be almost Jewish for at least one night every so often.” What’s on the menu tonight? As you can see, it’s a unique spin on the theme, with dishes I’m pretty sure you’ve never heard of (and kudos to you if you do know what hummus soup is!). Fattoush salad with roasted beets, hummus soup with rice grits and Kofta meatballs, kimchi-braised brisket, wilted greens, honey apple cake with salted caramel. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Read More
