It lists requirements for volunteering at a Red Cross shelter. They include being over 16 and availability to work 12-hour shifts from Wednesday, October 31 to Friday, November 2. Red Cross volunteers must also be able to lift at least 50 pounds, and be prepared to work at shelter locations outside of New York City and willing to stay for up to 72 hours.</li>
<li>New York City Councilman Brad Lander <a href="http://bradlander.com/hurricane" target="_blank">addresses the need for volunteers on his home page</a>, linking to the city's service site for anyone who <a href="http://www.nycservice.org/initiatives/24" target="_blank">wants to volunteer in the future</a> and also listing needs for the John Jay High School shelter in his district, located at 237 Seventh Avenue, between Fourth and Fifth Streets. Items needed there include clothing for men, women and children, towels and shoes.</li>

This will mean departing from the race, to head to various buildings, running up and down stairs delivering water and canned goods, etc." They ask non-runners who were planning to watch the race on Sunday to "bring water, cash, canned goods, blankets and/or be ready to donate blood."</li>

		<title>Wall Street’s Do-Gooder Summer</title>

<p align="left">On July 1, eight Goldman Sachs employees will meet outside the bank's new Manhattan skyscraper and head to the BARC animal shelter on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg. They'll walk, bathe and play with homeless dogs; brush and play with homeless cats; help with cleaning the cat loft; and change litter boxes.</p>
<p align="left">Six days later, according to a schedule for what the bank calls its Community TeamWorks program, there's an ice cream social at a Jersey City home for the blind, where eight more volunteers will decorate a large space with an Americana ice cream parlor theme. A week after that, 25 Goldman volunteers will go fishing with children in Prospect Park: On an outing last year, nothing was caught, an associate said, because of a layer of algae or something covering the pond. One kid fell in.</p>
<p align="left">Just as criticism of the banking system as entirely diabolic gets silly quickly, Wall Street still has an awfully hard time fitting into the role of bighearted community leader. Even as financial reform enters its final round in Washington, when the big banks talk about their special compassion and generosity, let alone the social usefulness of daily financial services, they mostly sound shallow, pompous or just awkward.</p>
<p align="left">"While consumers provide the fuel for the company, we provide the oil," said the lobbyist Scott E. Talbott, senior vice president of government affairs at the influential Financial Services Roundtable. "We make lives better. We make dreams happen. I don't want to wax poetic-there were some abuses, and corrections that are being made and have been made. But we are the oil." It was pointed out to Mr. Talbott that the oil imagery was unfortunate. "Maybe I should say lubricant, but that brings to mind other metaphors." He chuckled.</p>
<p align="left"><strong></strong>According to a BrandIndex chart posted by Reuters last week, Goldman ranks lower than BP when 5,000 interviewees are asked about current buzz. "As an industry, we've never done a good job at communicating exactly what we do," said a senior executive at one of the big banks. "And my personal view is that until there's not double-digit unemployment, until things get better in the economy and people are not so concerned, as well they should be, about their own livelihood, that's when we can be more proactive about repairing the damage. But now it would just peeing into a windstorm."</p>

<p align="left">IT IS ALMOST summertime in New York City, a season of Wall Street philanthropy, volunteerism and charity all over town. On Wednesday, June 16, JPMorgan has the first day of its Corporate Challenge road race in Central Park, promoting workplace fitness, goodwill, camaraderie and environmentalism.</p>
<p align="left">Earlier that day, Morgan Stanley holds the main event of its second annual Social Enterprise Strategy Challenge, run by a bank wing called the Environment, Social Finance and Community Reinvestment Group. "It's a terrible name," said Audrey Choi, the Morgan Stanley managing director who heads it. "We need some branding help, if you have some ideas."</p>
<p align="left">The participants, associates and vice presidents mostly in their 20s and early 30s, were nominated by their bosses. "We asked if they wanted to be involved, and there were people who said, 'You know what, I'm too busy in my day job,' but the vast majority did want to," said Ms. Choi. "What we found more and more, especially with Gen Y, is that people don't want to just write a check. They're really interested in engaging."</p>
<p align="left">A dozen teams of four were matched with nonprofits eight weeks ago and told to spend 5 to 10 hours weekly working on analyzing efficiency, growth and financial sustainability. "In some cases we are helping organizations that would never engage the likes of us, an investment bank, to help," Ms. Choi said, "and they probably wouldn't even be able to afford a boutique firm that specializes in nonprofit consulting."</p>
<p align="left">On Wednesday morning, the teams will be separated into three different rooms on the 41st floor of the bank's headquarters, part of an executive suite whose art includes a Pinocchio statue. Each room has three judges who pick a winner at the end of the morning; the finalists go to the bank's auditorium to give 15-minute onstage presentations. The first-place winner's nonprofit gets a $25,000 cash grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation to help implement the recommendations.</p>
<p align="left">The runner-up's gets $15,000, and the next gets half that. "But we think," Ms. Choi said, "the greater value is the consulting." Why are nearly 50 young stars doing a two-month nonprofit exercise? "I think we definitely believe that as important members of the community, hopefully leaders of the community, we have a responsibility to ensure that the communities where people live and work are healthy and strong," Ms. Choi said. "A fundamental part of Morgan Stanley's DNA is that, yeah, we have a responsibility to the community."</p>
<p align="left">"I think I can tell you," Pam Flaherty, the president and CEO of the Citi Foundation, and the bank's director of corporate citizenship, said about her bank a few hours later, "that it has always been part of the DNA of the company that we have a record of not just profitable relationship with our customers, but having them think we're a good and positive force in the community."</p>
<p align="left">She was speaking from a vacation in Northern Scotland. "People want to be proud in the company," she said, "and feel that it has a higher service, if you will."</p>
<p align="left"><strong><strong></strong></strong>"I want Citi to be known as the bank that practices responsible finance better than anyone else," CEO Vikram Pandit said in Sioux Falls in October. In November, he gave a speech in St. Louis on responsible finance and the future of banking. In March, in D.C., he told a Congressional oversight panel that the biggest change he's making "is to develop a culture of responsible finance. That's the legacy I want to leave behind." In April, at Citigroup's shareholder meeting, he described responsible finance as "the driving force."</p>
<p align="left">At the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School graduation in May, a text of his speech gave capital letters to "Responsible Finance." A few days later, Citigroup was fined $1.5 million for supervisory failures, after an investigation of theft from the trust funds of cemeteries in two states.</p>

<p>UNTIL RECENTLY, A charming oversize photograph of Goldman president and COO Gary D. Cohn adorned a lobby column in the bank's headquarters, a promotion for the bank's volunteerism program. It's just one wing of what Goldman calls corporate engagement, which includes a foundation, projects to promote women and small businesses around the world and an employee donation program.</p>
<p>Goldman gives a day off for Community TeamWorks, and expects its employees to use it. Every year, a site lists the official options, like next month's ice cream social decoration for the blind. "People, before it goes live, go in advance to see what's available. Because there are some that are really good, like taking kids to a Mets game," an associate said. "They have them listed-you can't register for them until the one day. Then you get an email saying, 'The page is live, go sign up.' It's funny; people are like, 'Shit, I missed the Mets game. Well, there's a New York Liberty game.'"</p>
<p align="left">A video commemorating the program's first 10 years is posted online. "When I think of Goldman Sachs, I think of energy, enthusiasm, willingness, teamwork, professionalism, people thinking of how they can do it as a team," says Emma Turner, a firm charity executive. She left for Barclays last year.</p>
<p align="left">There's footage of Thomas K. Montag at the Special Olympics in Japan. "Of all the projects that I've liked, it's when I interact with the kids," he says, launching up a basketball that bounces crisply off the glass and swishes in. He is the executive who sent the iconic "Boy, that Timberwolf was one shitty deal" email, referring to a billion-dollar subprime package that Goldman made and sold to clients, similar to the one the S.E.C. is investigating.</p>

<p align="left">On July 1, eight Goldman Sachs employees will meet outside the bank's new Manhattan skyscraper and head to the BARC animal shelter on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg. They'll walk, bathe and play with homeless dogs; brush and play with homeless cats; help with cleaning the cat loft; and change litter boxes.</p>
<p align="left">Six days later, according to a schedule for what the bank calls its Community TeamWorks program, there's an ice cream social at a Jersey City home for the blind, where eight more volunteers will decorate a large space with an Americana ice cream parlor theme. A week after that, 25 Goldman volunteers will go fishing with children in Prospect Park: On an outing last year, nothing was caught, an associate said, because of a layer of algae or something covering the pond. One kid fell in.</p>
<p align="left">Just as criticism of the banking system as entirely diabolic gets silly quickly, Wall Street still has an awfully hard time fitting into the role of bighearted community leader. Even as financial reform enters its final round in Washington, when the big banks talk about their special compassion and generosity, let alone the social usefulness of daily financial services, they mostly sound shallow, pompous or just awkward.</p>
<p align="left">"While consumers provide the fuel for the company, we provide the oil," said the lobbyist Scott E. Talbott, senior vice president of government affairs at the influential Financial Services Roundtable. "We make lives better. We make dreams happen. I don't want to wax poetic-there were some abuses, and corrections that are being made and have been made. But we are the oil." It was pointed out to Mr. Talbott that the oil imagery was unfortunate. "Maybe I should say lubricant, but that brings to mind other metaphors." He chuckled.</p>
<p align="left"><strong></strong>According to a BrandIndex chart posted by Reuters last week, Goldman ranks lower than BP when 5,000 interviewees are asked about current buzz. "As an industry, we've never done a good job at communicating exactly what we do," said a senior executive at one of the big banks. "And my personal view is that until there's not double-digit unemployment, until things get better in the economy and people are not so concerned, as well they should be, about their own livelihood, that's when we can be more proactive about repairing the damage. But now it would just peeing into a windstorm."</p>

<p align="left">IT IS ALMOST summertime in New York City, a season of Wall Street philanthropy, volunteerism and charity all over town. On Wednesday, June 16, JPMorgan has the first day of its Corporate Challenge road race in Central Park, promoting workplace fitness, goodwill, camaraderie and environmentalism.</p>
<p align="left">Earlier that day, Morgan Stanley holds the main event of its second annual Social Enterprise Strategy Challenge, run by a bank wing called the Environment, Social Finance and Community Reinvestment Group. "It's a terrible name," said Audrey Choi, the Morgan Stanley managing director who heads it. "We need some branding help, if you have some ideas."</p>
<p align="left">The participants, associates and vice presidents mostly in their 20s and early 30s, were nominated by their bosses. "We asked if they wanted to be involved, and there were people who said, 'You know what, I'm too busy in my day job,' but the vast majority did want to," said Ms. Choi. "What we found more and more, especially with Gen Y, is that people don't want to just write a check. They're really interested in engaging."</p>
<p align="left">A dozen teams of four were matched with nonprofits eight weeks ago and told to spend 5 to 10 hours weekly working on analyzing efficiency, growth and financial sustainability. "In some cases we are helping organizations that would never engage the likes of us, an investment bank, to help," Ms. Choi said, "and they probably wouldn't even be able to afford a boutique firm that specializes in nonprofit consulting."</p>
<p align="left">On Wednesday morning, the teams will be separated into three different rooms on the 41st floor of the bank's headquarters, part of an executive suite whose art includes a Pinocchio statue. Each room has three judges who pick a winner at the end of the morning; the finalists go to the bank's auditorium to give 15-minute onstage presentations. The first-place winner's nonprofit gets a $25,000 cash grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation to help implement the recommendations.</p>
<p align="left">The runner-up's gets $15,000, and the next gets half that. "But we think," Ms. Choi said, "the greater value is the consulting." Why are nearly 50 young stars doing a two-month nonprofit exercise? "I think we definitely believe that as important members of the community, hopefully leaders of the community, we have a responsibility to ensure that the communities where people live and work are healthy and strong," Ms. Choi said. "A fundamental part of Morgan Stanley's DNA is that, yeah, we have a responsibility to the community."</p>
<p align="left">"I think I can tell you," Pam Flaherty, the president and CEO of the Citi Foundation, and the bank's director of corporate citizenship, said about her bank a few hours later, "that it has always been part of the DNA of the company that we have a record of not just profitable relationship with our customers, but having them think we're a good and positive force in the community."</p>
<p align="left">She was speaking from a vacation in Northern Scotland. "People want to be proud in the company," she said, "and feel that it has a higher service, if you will."</p>
<p align="left"><strong><strong></strong></strong>"I want Citi to be known as the bank that practices responsible finance better than anyone else," CEO Vikram Pandit said in Sioux Falls in October. In November, he gave a speech in St. Louis on responsible finance and the future of banking. In March, in D.C., he told a Congressional oversight panel that the biggest change he's making "is to develop a culture of responsible finance. That's the legacy I want to leave behind." In April, at Citigroup's shareholder meeting, he described responsible finance as "the driving force."</p>
<p align="left">At the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School graduation in May, a text of his speech gave capital letters to "Responsible Finance." A few days later, Citigroup was fined $1.5 million for supervisory failures, after an investigation of theft from the trust funds of cemeteries in two states.</p>

<p>UNTIL RECENTLY, A charming oversize photograph of Goldman president and COO Gary D. Cohn adorned a lobby column in the bank's headquarters, a promotion for the bank's volunteerism program. It's just one wing of what Goldman calls corporate engagement, which includes a foundation, projects to promote women and small businesses around the world and an employee donation program.</p>
<p>Goldman gives a day off for Community TeamWorks, and expects its employees to use it. Every year, a site lists the official options, like next month's ice cream social decoration for the blind. "People, before it goes live, go in advance to see what's available. Because there are some that are really good, like taking kids to a Mets game," an associate said. "They have them listed-you can't register for them until the one day. Then you get an email saying, 'The page is live, go sign up.' It's funny; people are like, 'Shit, I missed the Mets game. Well, there's a New York Liberty game.'"</p>
<p align="left">A video commemorating the program's first 10 years is posted online. "When I think of Goldman Sachs, I think of energy, enthusiasm, willingness, teamwork, professionalism, people thinking of how they can do it as a team," says Emma Turner, a firm charity executive. She left for Barclays last year.</p>
<p align="left">There's footage of Thomas K. Montag at the Special Olympics in Japan. "Of all the projects that I've liked, it's when I interact with the kids," he says, launching up a basketball that bounces crisply off the glass and swishes in. He is the executive who sent the iconic "Boy, that Timberwolf was one shitty deal" email, referring to a billion-dollar subprime package that Goldman made and sold to clients, similar to the one the S.E.C. is investigating.</p>

Bloomberg and former Vice President and founder of the Alliance for Climate Protection Al Gore today launched an NYC Service initiative, &ldquo;NYC Cool Roofs,&rdquo; to mobilize volunteers to coat the rooftops of participating buildings with reflective, white coating to reduce cooling costs, energy usage and greenhouse emissions&hellip; A cool roof absorbs 80 percent less heat than traditional dark colored roofs and can lower roof temperatures by up to 60 degrees and indoor temperatures by 10 to 20 degrees on hot days. The decrease in temperature reduces the need for air conditioning, lowering electric bills and reducing energy consumption.&nbsp; Coating all eligible dark rooftops in New York City could result in up to a 1 degree reduction of New York City&rsquo;s ambient air temperature &ndash; a significant and lasting change towards cooling the City."</p>

<p>While the city&rsquo;s building code requires that new buildings include these types of roofs, the city has thousands of old structures that are not subject to these rules but could still be painted and help save energy. This is the low-hanging fruit of energy efficiency. The Mayor and his team should also be congratulated for integrating this program into the national effort to encourage greater volunteerism and public service.</p>
<p>However, in addition to the modest effort announced here, given the level of unemployment in the city and around the country, I wonder why we don&rsquo;t take some of those billions of stimulus dollars still unspent and put a bunch of people to work painting roofs throughout America. We could start with public buildings, including the nation&rsquo;s schools. Most people know how to paint or can be quickly trained, and it seems to me to be the kind of &ldquo;shovel-ready&rdquo; project that could do a lot of good in a hurry.</p>
<p>While a national program might make sense, what about our own government? The city government itself has a lot of buildings, and buried deep in the press release announcing the cool roofs program is the following puzzling declaration that seems to be the work of the City&rsquo;s Department of Citywide Administrative Services:</p>
<p>&ldquo;The Department of Citywide Administrative Services has identified 1 million square feet of roof space on City-owned buildings that could benefit from reflective, white coating, including homeless shelters, police precincts, fire stations, sanitation and transportation garages and office buildings.&nbsp; Once the results of the pilot program are reviewed, the City will move forward with coating applicable City-owned buildings with reflective, white coating.&rdquo;</p>
<p>For the life of me, I can&rsquo;t understand why this agency would think of roof painting as a pilot project. While I can see why a volunteer-based program to paint 100,000 square feet might be seen as an experiment, the energy reduction benefits of these roof surfaces is well established. More to the point, the city can&rsquo;t be asking private owners to resurface their roofs if they are unwilling to quickly renovate the roofs on their own buildings.</p>
<p>As Mayor Bloomberg heads into his November reelection bid, I think his efforts on sustainability, climate change, indoor air quality and overall public health are among the strongest parts of his very strong record. Still, the press statement on the Cool Roofs program provides an indication of the difficulty of bringing lasting change to city government. While the Mayor&rsquo;s office is creatively forging partnerships with Al Gore and with the voluntary sector, the City&rsquo;s own Department of Citywide Administrative Services is taking a &ldquo;wait and see&rdquo; approach toward cool roofs.&nbsp;</p>
<p>New York City&rsquo;s government faces many difficult, complex problems: Issues such as crime, terrorism, homelessness, education and emergency response come to mind. Painting roofs has got to be one of the easy ones. That is also why a program like this should go national. It is a simple, low-tech action that could put people to work and save energy as soon as the weather gets warm.&nbsp;</p>
