State Senator Michael Balboni, a Long Island Republican who may be running for Attorney General, is perhaps the only person in public life who will tell us on the record that he liked our “security pork” story. (We’ve had a couple dozen “you’re an asshole” emails from upstate firefighters; this one‘s my favorite.)
Balboni has a suggestion for curbing some of the absurdities of a system that gives money to people who don’t know what to do with it: Make counties match federal grants with their own money. So if they don’t really need the stuff, they won’t take the federal grant.
“We need a put up or shut up perspective,” he said. “You want more money, sure, but you have to spend something too.” No legislation introduced yet, though.
