The legendarily toothless Federal Elections Commission has issued Al Sharpton something resembling an ultimatum over his rather relaxed approach to the campaign finance laws.

The basic problem is that Sharpton appears to have spent about $95,000 more than his campaign for President took in.

“Requests for extension of time in which to respond will not be considered,” an FEC official wrote Sharpton’s campaign treasurer on March 3. “Failure to provide an adequate response by this date [April 1] may result in an audit of the committee.
