The Bigger One

At a hearing today called by Assemblymember Richard Brodsky, the city’s Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Bruno tripled the estimate for the number of evacuees from 1 million, which is what we had in our article a few weeks ago, to 3.4 million, should we encounter a Category 4 hurricane. The reason—the Office of Emergency Management is now assuming that 100 percent of people living in the flood plain will want to evacuate, compared to 60 percent, which was the pre-Katrina and pre-Rita assumption. Also, that new number includes 1.1 million who don’t have to evacuate but will anyway.

Two words for you: go bag.
