Whelan’s CRDA parachute

One of the reasons South Jersey Democrats may have reacted so poorly to Acting Governor Richard Codey’s appointment of Thomas Carver as Executive Director of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority was that Curtis Bashaw’s job was promised to someone else. Several sources say that former Atlantic City Mayor James Whelan believes there were enough winks and nods to cause him to believe that he would get the CRDA job (next year, under a Democratic administration) if he loses a bid for State Assembly in the second district this year. Democrats are making a genuine bid to oust Republican Assemblymen Frank Blee and Kirk Conover, but the GOP is still favored. As one Democratic insider put it: “Makes sense that they used Bashaw’ job as a carrot with Whelan to get him to run.”
