Control of the Board of Freeholders is at stake in politically competitive Salem County, and Democrats will likely receive a boost after a jury found that three GOP Freeholders and the Republican County organization defamed Democratic Freeholder Charles Sullivan. The GOP incorrectly claimed in a campaign mailing that Sullivan said the county tax rate was “not his problem.” Republicans say they will appeal. Democrats have a 4-3 majority on the Freeholder Board and control is at stake in the 2005 general election. Two Freeholders are seeking re-election: Democrats Sullivan and Republican David Sparks. Republican Surrogate Geneva Wood is retiring.
