The Republican candidate for Atlantic County Sheriff has dropped out of the race after federal officials found that his candidacy was in violation of the Hatch Act. Stephen Caldwell, a Lieutenant in the Sheriff’s office, holds a job that is paid for with federal funds. That leaves his boss, Democratic Sheriff James McGettigan, unopposed for re-election. Republicans claim that the April 2005 order transferring Caldwell — already a candidate for Sheriff — to a federally-funded job by McGettigan was a set-up. Democrats deny it. McGettigan’s brother is the Republican candidate for Atlantic County Surrogate.
