Constructing Urgency

Jason phones in from City College, where Mayor Bloomberg just gave a speech summing up his last four years in office. Buried in it was this interesting nugget:

“In five days, I ask to you to take a stand for our future, just like you did four years ago. The stakes are high. Our challenge is to keep our city moving forward and, to do that, I need you to vote. Do not take this election for granted.”

There’s a predictable, if slight, pitfall to utter dominance in the polls. Anticipated landslide victories don’t light fires under your voters. Over the next few days, I’ll be interested to see whether this kind of rhetoric continues, and how Mike tries to re-instill a sense of urgeny in people who may be…taking the election for granted.
