Gov. Pataki, long perceived as a quiet supporter of Bill Weld, said he won’t be backing anyone for the Republican gubernatorial nod, according to one of the candidates in the race.
“The governor personally told me last Wednesday that he is staying strictly neutral in this race, and he’s not going to endorse anyone,” John Faso told The Observer on Monday.
Pataki spokesman Kevin Quinn wouldn’t confirm the conversation.
“The governor believes that we have a number of potential candidates who have very strong records as outstanding public servants, and he thinks it’s positive for the party that they’re making their case across the state,” he said.
