Spadea’s out

Bill Spadea is taking a pass on the 2006 U.S. Senate race, leaving Assemblyman Michael Doherty as the only real conservative challenger to Tom Kean Jr. in the GOP primary. Doherty, perhaps one of the two most conservative legislators, is reportedly giving strong consideration to the race. Another potential candidate, Assemblyman Joseph Pennacchio, who was prepared to challenge Jon Corzine back when Corzine looked to be a candidate for a second term, said last week that he would endorse Kean. Spadea has opted out of a rematch with Congressman Rush Holt in the 12th district (he won 40% in 2004) and seems to have his eye on a challenge to Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes in 2007.
