Clearing the field

Two signs that Tom Kean, Jr. has cleared the field in his bid for the Republican nomination for United States Senate: the appearance of Senator Elizabeth Dole, the National Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair, at a Kean fundraiser this morning; and the endorsement of one of the state’s leading conservatives, former Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler. Three Republicans who had explored a Senate campaign — Assemblymen Joseph Pennacchio and Michael Doherty, and ’04 congressional candidate William Spadea — have all declined to run.
