Elmer Matthews, who as Counsel to New Jersey Conference of Catholic Bishops has been a key player in opposition to the use of taxpayer money on Stem Cell research, is a former Speaker of the New Jersey State Assembly. Matthews was elected to represent Essex County in 1957 and re-elected in 1959 and 1961. When Democrats won control of the lower house in 1961, Matthews became the Majority Leader, and in 1963 served as the Speaker. He has been a Trenton lobbyist for most of the last forty years.
