At this point, few insiders are giving Jeanine much chance of staying in the race for Senate, though insiders can be wrong.
But if she drops out, that hardly leaves the race where it was a year ago. Presumably, she sucked up whatever’s left of the core anti-Hillary money. John Spencer, a classic protest candidate, has generated a following among conservatives. Ed Cox, who seemed ready to run a respectable, if seriously longshot, Republican campaign (and whose Web site is still live), has given up his hold on the Conservative Party, lost thousands of dollars and months of campaigning — at the Governor’s behest.
What it all means? Hillary’s opponent, Jeanine or otherwise, will be crippled by this mess. In the expectations game, on the other hand, the margin by which Hillary has to win keeps getting wider.
