Democrats are looking at a primary in the seventh district, where Republican Congressman Michael Ferguson is seeking re-election to a fourth term. Assemblywoman Linda Stender will file a campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission later this month, and former Hillsborough Mayor Joseph Tricarico announced in November. Stender is in the process of hiring campaign staff and consultants and has begun calling local officials and pary leaders to tell them she has decided to run. Sources say that Emily’s List, a national organization that raises money for Democratic woman running for Congress, has decided to back Stender. Stender, a former Union County Freeholder and Fanwood Mayor, represents parts of Union, Middlesex and Somerset counties in the Legislature. She will have the organization line in Union County, and has the support of State Senator Joseph Vitale, a powerful Woodbridge Democrat. Look for Hunterdon County Democrats to side with Union if there is a fight.
