OK, the City Council can recede back to obscurity soon, but one other thought on how Chris won.
Over on New York Press’s blog, Azi has de Blasio’s final math, and writes that Bill’s problem was that he was “stuck at 17” votes.
De Blasio, who had caucus meetings and headcounts, did seem to be winning by the ordinary measures of a leadership race.
But because of the central role of the Queens machine, de Blasio’s numerical lead — and he did seem to have more commitments than Chris –doesn’t seem to have mattered. Who cares if you’re up 15-8? The whole ballgame is having just enough of your own supporters to push Queens plus an allied machine over the top.
