You’d think that once New York Press weathered the controversy over cheering the Pope’s death, they’d be ready for anything.

Which suggests that editor Harry Siegel had a point when he said, on TV last night, that the threats of violence had something to do with American newspapers citing other principles in not publishing the cartoons.

“A lot of papers haven’t run these cartoons because they’ve felt threatened….And they’ve been worried about the consequences. And if that happens, then this violence has been worthwhile and it’s accomplished its goal.”
