In the race for Mayor of Gloucester Township, Camden County Democrats will back 54-year-old Bill Collins, a popular former high school track coach and the local School Board President. Collins will run with Councilmen Gene Lawrence and Frank Schmidt, and Councilwoman Marge Martin Martinis in the May 9 non-partisan municipal election. The longtime incumbent, Mayor Sandra Love, is not seeking re-election. Congressman Rob Andrews and the Gloucester Township Democratic Committee announced their endorsement of Collins today. Andrews touted Collins’ story: he overcame a childhood illness that left him unable to walk until age eleven to become a track star, and after a drunk driving conviction, he became a founder of Highland High School’s Students Against Drunk Driving.
