Jennifer Jo Smith’s lanky, brown-eyed second-born arrived after an induced labor, with pneumonia and a weak lung. “He was an otherwise healthy baby that got sick somehow,” said Ms. Smith, 33, a former archivist and real-estate agent turned homemaker who has been married to Medsite analyst Kevin Smith, 34, for six years. “They couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him, except that he couldn’t breathe on his own.” It was 11 days before Milo could join his parents and adoring 3-year-old sister Astrid (“She thinks it’s her baby”) in their Greenpoint two-bedroom. “I didn’t get to hear him cry until he was a week old,” said the relieved mother. “In the beginning, it didn’t bother me at all—it was so nice to hear him cry.” She admits that the novelty is rapidly wearing off.
