Writing in the comments section beneath the recent post about the death of former City Council Member Bob Dryfoos, someone shared a pair of ancient, typically harsh Inner Circle numbers parodying Dryfoos’s legenday, last-minute maneuver to make Peter Vallone Speaker in 1986.
The tunes are hardly respectful, but people who knew Dryfoos say he wouldn’t have minded; one imagines his assassination at the hands of his angry fellow Manhattan members, the other compares him to Benedict Arnold. True period pieces, with passages like this one, from a duet by the forgotten Sam Horwitz and former Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden:
How can I punish him
With my future looking grim
A hit-man would suffice
If only Dowd would tie him to Manes
Wouldn’t that be nice
