Last night. Community Board 8 overwhelmingly rejected a building proposal at 591 Park Avenue, in the Upper East Side Historic District. The new building, by Barry Rice Architects, would inhabit a space currently occupied by a five-story nondescript apartment building wedged between the neo-Classical Third Church of Christ, Scientist, and the neo-Gothic Central Presbyterian Church on the east side of Park Avenue between 63rd and 64th streets.
Details for the new building are sketchy–the architects at the meeting wouldn’t tallk to us, but we snapped these pictures of the renderings. The central complaints of the community board were the height of the new building, which would block the sight lines to the spire of Central Presbyterian and the cupola of the Third Church of Christ, and the plain, detail-less south wall.
The board’s decision is merely advisory, but we expect the Landmarks Preservation Commission to uphold it.
