Vas letter seeking leniency for sex offender could emerge as campaign issue

When a 41-year-old man was convicted of having a sexual relationship with a fourteen-year-old girl in 2004 and of having numerous files on his home computer depicting children having sex , he turned to an old friend for help: Joseph Vas, an Assemblyman and Mayor of Perth Amboy. In a letter, Vas asked Superior Court Judge John Harper to consider a lenient sentence, saying his friend had already paid emotionally and financially for his crimes. “I believe that Mr. Trinidad has already paid a stiff price,” Vas wrote about his friend, Joseph Trinidad, who had admitted to meeting the teenager for sex in motel rooms and in cars. Now Vas is seeking the Democratic nomination for Congress in the 13th district, and news reports of his attempt to ask a state Judge to reduce jail time for a sex offender is expected to become an issue in the campaign.
