Fulton Mall, The Sequel

The complete report by the Pratt Center for Community Development and Minerva Partners on redeveloping downtown Brooklyn’s mall is now up on the web. The report’s writer, Vicki Weiner, seems to think that despite the racial and social landmines posed by making a (largely African-American) shopping strip more attractive to its (increasingly white) neighbors, it can work.

Just to give an example of how tricky this will be, here’s an excerpt:

On the other hand, the American system has a wonderful way of making money off of ghetto, white trash and hippie culture that holding on to the ghetto while gentrifying the mall may not be problematic at all.
