There are some very mixed signals coming out of Tom Kean, Jr.’s campaign about debates — specifically about Bob Menendez’s challenge for a televised debate before the end of this month. Yesterday, the Kean campaign called the Menendez debate challenge a stunt, but then gave one reporter the impression that they would accept. Three Republicans involved in the Kean campaign said a TV debate with Menendez is not likley to happen before the fall — largely because they don’t view Kean as ready to go head-to-head with Menendez at this time. But Kean’s staff insists that if a legitimate debate sponsor steps up, they are likely to accept. Update: WNBC-TV in New York has offered to sponsor a U.S. Senate debate between Menendez and Kean on Sunday, June 26 at noon — a forum that will be virtually impossible for Kean to turn down.
