For Republicans, GOTV finally works out

Ballots cast by forty Republicans in two Democratic primaries for the Elizabeth City Council will force voters to return to the polls in September for a new primary. A Superior Court Judge last week invalidated narrow primary victories for two political rivals of Mayor Christian Bollwage after finding that the number of GOP voters in each of two ward contests exceeded the margin of victory. In the Third Ward, incumbent Robert Jaspan defeated Joseph Keenan by two votes, 1,030 to 1,028, with thirteen registered Republicans voting in the Democratic primary. In the Second Ward, George O’Grady won by five votes, 603-598, over Nelson Gonzalez in a race where 27 Republicans voted.
