The long-running saga over The Related Companies’ Gateway Center mall ended today with a groundbreaking in the South Bronx. Last Tuesday, the city’s Industrial Development Agency gave the once-embattled project a last little push by exempting the project from $11.2 million in mortgage recording taxes. The city’s $8 million relocation program for the Bronx Terminal Market merchants who were displaced by the mall may have worked: all 22 of them are staying in New York City, 18 in the Bronx, according to the press release. We will see if they fare as well in their new locations as Target does in their old one.
