The last time a candidate for United States Senate lost a bid for the nomination of his party and then won the general election was in 1978. In a fierce convention battle, Virginia Republicans picked GOP State Chairman Richard Obenshain to run for an open Senate seat over former Secretary of the Navy John Warner, who was then married to the actress Elizabeth Taylor. Obsenshain died in an airplane crash shortly after winning the nomination, and Warner became the GOP candidate.
