In Salem, Democrats oust five-term Freeholder and GOP wins Sheriff race

Republican Benjamin Simmeron, who has served on the Salem County Board of Freeholders for the last fifteen years, lost his bid for a sixth term on Tuesday. Jeffrey Hogan, a political newcomer, defeated him by 1,079 votes to give the Democrats a 6-1 majority that assures the party of control through 2008. Democratic Freeholder Beth Timberman won a landslide re-election, defeating Repblican Michael Manahan by nearly 5,000 votes. In the race for Sheriff, where longtime GOP incumbent John Cooksey is retiring, Republican Chuck Miller won a 1,040 vote, 52%-48% victory over Democrat Bill Higgins.
