Rau-Hutton won’t take on Madden

Gloucester Township Mayor Cindy Rau-Hutton, a Republican who was elected in a May 2006 non-partisan election, has ruled out a challenge to Democratic State Senator Frederick Madden in 2007. The GOP candidate recruitment wish list against Madden has three names: former State Senator George Geist, who lost his seat by just 63 votes in 2003; Gloucester Township Councilman Daniel Hutchison, who ran on Rau-Hutton’s ticket last May; and former Assemblyman Stephen Altamurro, who lost his bid for re-election to the Washington Township Council last month. Geist, who has been recruited to run by some public employee labor unions interested in ousting Madden, would have to resign his post as a state Administrative Law Judge to make the race. A strong challenger against Madden is an essential component to any plan that would have Republicans win any more than the eighteen Senate seats the currently hold.
