The 10,807 people in Guttenberg, where FBI agents raided the home of Mayor David Della Donna, are no strangers to the rough-and-tumble of Hudson County politics. Herman Klein spent 28 years as Mayor and beat back two criminal indictments. He had been charged with taking payoffs and for holding a no-show job at the Hudson County Air and Water Pollution Commission. Klein was 34-years-old when he was elected Mayor in 1951. As part of a plea bargain on charges of his no-show job, he resigned as Mayor in 1976 — but he won the job back, easily, in 1981, and died in office two years later.
