Coniglio subpoena could mean wealthy challenger

Several Bergen County Republican leaders are urging Lawrence Lewitinn, a wealthy real estate investor from Fort Lee, to enter the race for State Senate in the 38th district. The incumbent, Democrat Joseph Coniglio, was served with a subpoena on Monday in connection to a federal probe of legislatorsreceiving an alleged personal benefit from state budget items.

The 34-year-old Lewitinn, who ran for the Assembly in 2003 and came within a handful of votes of upsetting the organization favorite at the Bergen GOP convention, is saying he will respond to the draft effort with careful consideration of a Senate bid.

Coniglio, a two-term Paramus Democrat, received $5,500-a-month as a plumbing consultant for Hackensack University Medical Center, who later received over $1 million in state grants.
