Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes said today that he would seek re-election to a second term, and Republican Janice Mitchell Mintz, who served as state Commissioner of Personnel from 1998 to 2002, will announce tomorrow that she will run against him.
Hughes, the son of former Gov. Richard Hughes and an ex-Mercer County Freeholder, was elected in 2003 in a close race against then-County Clerk Catherine DiCostanzo. GOP incumbent Robert Prunetti did not seek re-election.
Republicans had held the County Executive post for 24 years.
Mintz, 47, served as a counsel to Governors Thomas Kean and Christie Whitman, and as Whitman's Deputy Chief of Staff, and is a former first Assistant Attorney General.
