The West New York Police Department Tuesday, March 20, arrested Gerald Lange of West New York – identified by the Associated Press as the Hudson County Freeholder and West New York Commissioner – on a charge of aggravated assault.
According to a police press release, upon their arrival at Lange's residence at Fulton Court at 2:19 a.m. and after speaking with both Lange and his wife, officers said they observed "signs of domestic violence" at the scene.
They subsequently took Lange into custody where he was charged and released, according to department Director Oscar Fernandez.
Fernandez said Det. Elio Martinez and Patrolman Ray Hernandez initially responded to a phone call reporting a "domestic incident."
The police director on Tuesday afternoon would provide no further details about the case.
Lange has served as a Freeholder since Nov. 21, 2006, when he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Silverio "Sal" Vega, who vacated his seat to fill Albio Sires' unexpired terms, both in the State Assembly, and as Mayor of West New York.
Vega is now locked in a State Senate dist. 33 primary battle with Assemblyman (and Union City Mayor) Brian P. Stack.
