Mike Bloomberg has talked a lot about gun violence in the past. But he was notably careful to steer clear of anything smacking of politics in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting — the worst such incident in American history — waiting a day before saying anything at all, and then, yesterday, responding in only the most general terms.
“We have tragedies all the time,” he said in response to one reporter’s question. “Our children and our police officers are getting shot by criminals. And when we look at the guns, we find, with those people, they are almost invariably guns that were purchased in violation of the law, through straw purchases, or sold in bulk to somebody that has a criminal record. And that’s what we’re going to focus on, and I’ll leave the irony up to others. Any other questions?”
