When it comes to fund-raising, it‘s better to exceed low expectations than to come up short of bigger ones. Hillary Clinton hasn’t had many occasion to lower expectations, but last night she did, when she held a fund-raiser in Chicago, home turf of the Democratic money leader Barack Obama.

“We expected to have 50 attorneys at $1,000 a pop,” said a Clinton campaign aide.
“We ended up with 300 attendees and $310K,” this person said.

If you’re math is rusty, that’s six times the number of attendees they said they were expecting, and three time the amount of money they expected to raise.
