Otto Gets Blotto

On most nights, it seems like a good chunk of the city follows the glow of Washington Arch to Mario Batali’s Otto Enoteca Pizzeria at the bottom of Fifth Avenue. Inside, guests while away the wait for a table by sipping on one of more than 1,000 Italian wines, requesting cortinos with common phrases like “dry”, “less expensive” or “I usually like Cabs.” But for those Otto patrons who’d like to finesse their ordering skills, the restaurant offers $40 vino classes, where six wines are paired with Otto’s sumptuous antipasti. Functioning winos are sure to flock en masse to “Intro to Italian Wine” at 2 p.m. on May 6, when instructors will teach the difference between ripasso and passito.
